Each year, in communities across the country, dynamic and passionate candidates engage in a spirited fundraising competition to raise critical funds for blood cancer research for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through the Man & Woman of the Year campaign. At a kickoff event March 30 at the Buckhead Theatre, the society’s Georgia chapter celebrated these individuals who will compete to earn the titles of Man and Woman of the Year.

The candidates are community and business leaders who are philanthropic, ambitious, socially active, resourceful and passionate about making a difference in the lives of people suffering from blood cancers. Their relentless ambition drives them to fundraise with remarkable results. This year’s candidate class includes 22 community leaders and one All-Star candidate who as a team, aim to raise over $1.5 million in 10 weeks to fight blood cancer. The All-Star candidate will compete at a national level against other All Stars from across the nation.

“The Man & Women of the Year campaign is a great way for candidates to network with other influential people in their communities while also providing assistance and hope to thousands of blood cancer patients,” Piper Medcalf, the chapter’s executive director, said in a news release. “Candidates showcase their fundraising and community outreach skills as well as their commitment to the cause.”

The Man & Woman of the Year campaign will culminate at the Grand Finale Gala June 9 from 6 to 11 p.m. at the InterContinental Hotel in Buckhead. The candidates who raise the most funds will be awarded the Man & Woman of the Year titles, respectively.

Mary Jacqueline Campbell MERRITT Obituary

MERRITT, Mary Jacqueline Campbell Passed away peacefully Sunday, February 1, 2015, due to natural causes. Mary was born April 8, 1922 in Summerville, GA. She moved to Atlanta with her family when she was a baby. She graduated from Girls High School in 1940. In 1941, she married Berry Frank Merritt (Frank). They were married 68 years until Frank passed away in 2010. Prior to WWII and during the war, Mary worked for Westinghouse, which Frank had also worked for until he enlisted. After having 3 children, Mary started selling Real Estate in Atlanta in the late 60’s for Spartlin, before joining Northside Reality. After 25 years in Real Estate, Mary retired. During her career, she received several awards including the Phoenix Award, and had been recognized as one of the top agents for many years. Mary and Frank were members of 1st Baptist Church of Alpharetta. Mary is survived by 3 children: Nancy Gammage, wife of Charles (Doc) Gammage, Tommy Merritt, husband of Frankie Merritt, and Don Merritt, 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. We will truly miss our wonderful mother. The funeral service is Friday, February 6, 2015, at 12:00 at Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Home, which is located at 136 Mt. Vernon Hwy. Visitation is from 11:00 to 12:00 Friday.

Sandy Springs Cracks Down On “Stick-Built” Apartments

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — The Sandy Springs City Council recently moved forward with changes to its building code that would, according to city staff, make apartment living much safer for residents.

The city’s changes would require any new building over three stories and exceeding 100,000 square feet be constructed with so-called “noncombustible materials” such as steel or concrete.

One small caveat: the city’s change has to be approved by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

Land purchases move forward Sandy Springs park, intersection projects

Land purchases approved by Sandy Springs City Council Jan. 16 will move forward a new park and a long-awaited intersection redesign.

A $39,500 purchase of flood-plain land in the panhandle will allow the city to link its new Crooked Creek Park to a currently inaccessible part of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area via a walking trail.

And about $171,000 is buying the city five of eight parcels needed as right of way to rebuild the Roswell Road/Glenridge Drive intersection, which is in the design phase.
